Atmospheric “New Music” meets beats
In 2013 the director Adrian Furrer, in cooperation with the actress Eva Lenherr, transformed the novel ‘Die Wand’ (The Wall) by Marlene Haushofer into a theatrical production at the Theater am Gleis in Winterthur. Marcel Zaes was invited to compose original music for this production, which was to be interpreted live on stage by the top-class Ensemble TAG (Ensemble Theater am Gleis). Thus the chamber-musical work “CUT LOW FROM ABOVE” for bass/alto/piccolo flute, piano, bass clarinet and electronics came into being. The theatre music was closely interwoven with the 90-minute monologue, which is ‘Die Wand’, and produced a nearly gapless sound atmosphere. Its means are monotony, repetition, variation, silence and nearly nothingness, implemented by the richness of sound of the Ensemble TAG Winterthur. For the concert as well as the CD, the theatre music was rewritten into a 50-minute concert version.
